We had our first visitor this weekend! My sister drove down from New Hampshire to see us. It was so beautiful on Saturday we had to do an outdoor activity. We decided to go apple picking. I can’t live in New England and not go! We went to Silverman’s Farm in Easton, Connecticut which was only a few miles from our house.
There were about three types of apples that were ready for picking on our trip. I bought one 10 pound sack and we picked a variety of Macoun’s and two others (I can’t remember which ones). The bag fills up pretty fast so we spent some time strolling through the orchard.
I can’t wait to make a few treats with my bundle of apples! I’m contemplating Apple Butter and maybe Canned Cinnamon Apples. I want to make a pie but my pie plate is still coming across the Atlantic. We might have our shipment in the next 2-3 weeks. Unless customs is on furlough during the government shutdown…
Apple picking is a very popular family pastime. I recommend going early, bring cash to pay for your apple sack and decide how many apples you really need. The farm we went to had a set size bag that had to be bough for 1, 2 and 4 people. Most important don’t forget your camera. Lots of photo ops up in the orchards.
There were other activities to keep the kids occupied as well. Petting zoo and pumpkin patches. Check with the farm which weekend other activities will be running. This website is a little dated but it has a list of farms with pick your own fruit by state.
We worked up an appetite after all that apple picking. We haven’t explored too much of new neighborhood so we went and tried Burger Bar & Bistro in South Norwalk. We really enjoyed the garlic fries and Kayla liked her slider sampler.
