Raise your hand if you get swept away with pumpkin fever every fall! The pumpkin craze finally reached the shores of the UK last autumn with the arrival of the pumpkin spice latte but those of us in the know knew where to find canned pumpkin years ago. During the pumpkin shortage of 2011 I bought and carried about 10 cans of pumpkin straight across London for fear of being without pumpkin pie. Eating and baking with pumpkin is more of a North American thing and when I arrived back in the US permanently, just over a month ago, I went crazy and bought every single pumpkin product I saw on the shelves.

Better late than never! One month late I finally made my Julia Child inspired dessert. The cupcake book club will be back on track next week. I can’t wait to get back into the habit of reading again. Back in the UK I would get most of my reading in on my commute to work. I’m still too afraid to take my eye off the ball, or rather let my mind wander when it comes to the trains in America! After the great train debacle on my first day I’ve been consumed with getting on and off the right train everyday that I’m too stressed to read my kindle on the journey.

I had about 10 pounds of apples hanging around the house after my sister and I went apple picking when she came to visit. I knew that between Alex and I we wouldn’t be able to eat 10 pounds worth of apple pie!

This is the second recipe I made from Sweet. This is also the recipe that started my pudding obsession. Once I realized homemade pudding tasted way better than the lumpy stuff from a box I’ve made a few different variations including, Banana and Funfetti. In Sweet, Valerie makes a more complex salted caramel parfait but I decided to keep it simple as just a regular bowl of pudding with a dollop of whipped cream.
After I read Miracle Pie I couldn’t stop thinking about banana cream pie! The main character in the novel, Katie, has weird pie related premonitions and can accurately make a pie to suit occasions before the event happens. The pies are never wrong. I couldn’t resist making a pie when I finished the book.
