The latest selection from Cupcake Book Club was The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. The book was bizarre and I was left disappointed with the storyline because it had great potential but in the end fell flat.
At the beginning of the book the main character, Rose, discovers she has a special talent for tasting feelings in food. She has the first experience of this talent after her mother makes her a lemon fudge cake for her ninth birthday. She tastes the cake and all she can taste and feel is her mother’s sadness and despair.
I pretty much hated the book but thank god my lemon fudge cake doesn’t taste like sadness! I made a small sheet cake in a 9×9 inch pan. I used half of this recipe (Alejandra was confused by the book too!). I wish I’d made the whole recipe so I’d have a thicker cake but I under estimated the amount of batter that it produced. The cake while thin has a great crumb suited for a layer cake. I love the chocolate and lemon combo and would make it again.
Surprisingly, this is actually the first time I made a sheet cake. A great kind of cake for low effort.
