I promise after this very exciting post that I will keep the baby stuff to a minimum. I still plan to keep the main focus on here as baking and the occasional crafting. I can’t wait to tell you all if we’re having a boy or a girl. I actually found out what we were having at 15 weeks and it’s been SO hard to keep it under wraps.
The doctor couldn’t get a good reading on my first trimester screening so offered me a blood test that checks for all the abnormalities as well as gender! I can’t believe the technology available today. My mom didn’t even have a sonogram with me.
We finally got our refrigerator a few days ago and I couldn’t wait to make this cake. I wasn’t having a party or anything special but wanted to share something special for my bundle of joy. Scroll down for the reveal!
We’re having a little boy! We’re very excited and I’m in the middle of planning his nursery. It’s so hard to decide because everything baby is just so darn cute! At the moment my idea is to keep it simple and classic.
This would be a fun cake to make for a baby shower or gender reveal party. I used this same recipe from Bake it Like you Mean It but with almond extract instead of vanilla. I had trouble with the cream cheese frosting being a little too runny. I used the cream cheese frosting on the layers and made a classic buttercream with lemon for the outside.
Just a warning, this cake is pretty labor intensive! I made the cake layers and frosting one evening and the next morning started working on assembling and layering.
I wanted to make frosting roses for the outside but didn’t make enough buttercream so decided to instead keep it simple and I sprayed the outside with Wilton color mist. It works best when you hold the cans a little further back. I got a little too close on certain areas and it came out a little splotchy.
