{Book Review} Hummingbird Bakery Life is Sweet
Posted by Cupcake Kelly on Mar 24, 2015 in Book Review | 0 commentsLife is Sweet is the 4th installment of cookbooks for the Hummingbird Bakery. Those of you that live in the US may not be familiar with this bakery. It was one of the first American style bakeries in the UK opening on the famous Portobello Road back in 2004. Their first cookbook was sold in the US. I do recall seeing it at Barnes & Noble before.
This installment has 100 American style recipes with chapters on cakes, cupcakes, layer cakes, cookies, pies, tray bakes, pancakes, ice cream, puddings and bread. The book is pretty thorough identifying which recipes are easy and which ones require more advanced skills. There are plenty of appetizing photographs to accompany each recipe.

If you’re familiar with American baking many of the recipes and bakes will be familiar. There are several recipes that I’ve made and blogged about such as red velvet brownies, honey cornbread and beignets. As well as recipes that are pretty standard across pretty much any American blog like butter cake, pancakes and graham crackers.

The lesser known American bakes are the most interesting in the book. Appalachian stack cake, Alabama Little Layer Cake and Ozark Pudding Cake. I made three recipes from the book so far. Tunnel of Fudge Cake, Peanut Butter Marshmallow Cookies and 7Up Cake. I’ve only attempted easy recipes to date. I have my eye on some of the layer cakes. Maybe once I get a baby sitter I’ll have some time to make one!
The tunnel of fudge cake was super rich, the peanut butter marshmallow cookies were perfectly chewy and the 7UP Pound Cake was fun and citrusy.
