{Book Review} Semi Sweet: A Novel of Love and Cupcakes

Semi Sweet: A Novel of Love and Cupcakes by Rosin Meaney is the first book in the brand new Cupcake Book Club! I was so excited that my copy arrived in time for the long Easter weekend. It was a great easy read and I finished it by Easter Monday! I have so many ideas swimming in my head for my inspirational treat right now.

The book follows eight different characters in the fictional small town of Clongarvin, Ireland and how their lives intertwine around the main character Hannah and the opening of her cupcake shop.

Hannah Robinson is just about to open the doors to her new shop Cupcakes on the Corner when out of the blue her boyfriend Patrick announces that he’s leaving her for another woman. Faced with starting a business on her own, Hannah begins to wonder if her life-long dream has just turned into a nightmare. So her best friend Adam sets his birthday as a deadline – seven months to make her shop a success, or walk away from it all. And as Hannah immerses herself in her new business, she soon discovers that she’s too busy to think about Patrick and his now pregnant girlfriend …or to notice an increasingly regular customer who has recently developed a sweet tooth for all things cupcake. But while Hannah is slowly piecing her life back together, family friend Alice’s is falling apart. Her husband Tom’s drinking is getting out of control and things are about to get a whole lot worse. As the seven-month milestone approaches, Hannah must decide her future. And while she’s figuring out what’s really important, it becomes clear to everyone that happiness in life, and in love, is all in the making.

As the book follows so many characters it clocks in at over 300 pages. The story however, manages to get just enough of a glimpse into each of the characters but the storyline maintains a good the flow. The book focuses on Hannah’s life and emotions while trying to the run the shop as a new business owner.

I enjoyed the aspect of the book being set in Ireland and Hannah trying to explain to some people what the heck a cupcake is! Cupcakes are referred to as “buns” several times throughout the book. Hannah’s boyfriend, Wally, at one point refers to them as “sexy buns”. Hannah’s best friend Adam provides most of the comic relief and moves in with Hannah to help pay the mortgage and insists he “only drinks from the carton when no one is looking”.

This book is an ideal pool side or rainy day read. I was so engrossed in the book I only made a few notes to myself! I enjoyed the book enough that I would seek out one of Rosin’s six other novels.

If you’d like to read and bake along to Semi Sweet there’s still plenty of time.  Send any entries by May 9th.

  1. I don’t normally read this kind of fiction but have to admit that I did – on your recommendation – and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s escapism at its best.
