{Book Review} How to Bake a Perfect Life

This month’s Cupcake Book Club is How to Bake a Perfect Life by Barbara O’Neal. The novel is set in a small tourist town in Colorado and tells the story of Ramona, a small bakery owner. I’m very pleased with my selection this month as I have been fascinated with bread and yeast recently. Ramona loves to bake bread and the very first page of the book details starters and mother dough.

The book switches back and forth between a grown up Ramona and her teenage self to give us a view of her strained family relationships to what lead her to where she is today with her life. Ramona had a daughter, Sophia, at the age of 15 and there a several chapters in the eyes her and the other female characters in the book.

The story weaves in and out of her life but it also contains different bread recipes from the certain stages in her life and what they mean to her. I felt the characters in this book were real, believable and also something people could relate too on different levels. Except for maybe the quasi magical dog but I still adored him!

One of my favorite quotes from the book. Ramona’s new boyfriend tells her how he feels about their relationship.

…it feels magical. Like my blood is filled with glitter. Like a spell was finally broke.
